A CoolStuffInc visit in Orlando

When most people travel to Orlando, Florida, they’re thinking about Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, and all sorts of family fun.

But when you’re traveling by yourself for a business trip, those theme parks aren’t typical on the itinerary.

At least, that was the case for me while I was in Orlando for a conference for a few days last week.

Instead, I spent some time one evening visiting a CoolStuffInc game store in the area. And I’m so glad I did!

Record numbers at SaltCon 2019!

Another super fun weekend of board gaming at SaltCon is in the books!

I look forward to SaltCon with high anticipation every year and it never disappoints.

And that’s exactly how I’m feeling again looking back on last weekend of fun board gaming with friends and strangers.

SaltCon is our local board game convention that rolls around the first weekend of March. And like the previous years, it continues to hit record numbers.

For SaltCon 2019, more than 1,900 people came for the fun!

We’re not sure if 2018 flew by for you, but it sure seemed like it did for us. We passed a number of milestones as a family this year. And we ended 2018 with a bang by taking a family vacation over Christmas and into the New Year. It’s so great to all be together again.

Fallen Treasures coming soon

At SaltCon earlier this year I met game designer Tucker Smedes as he introduced some friends and I to The Pirate’s Flag.

We had a great time playing the game and enjoyed getting to know Tucker. He’s the owner of publishing company CardLords and they’ve just launched a Kickstarter game for a very family friendly game called Fallen Treasures.

Women game and toy inventors abound

You might have guessed the inventor of the Barbie Doll was a women. But did you know the inventor of Monopoly was also a woman? That’s right, Elizabeth Magie invented The Landlords Game in 1903!

It then went on to be published as Monopoly by Parker Brothers in 1935. It has since been licensed in more than 103 countries, printed in more than 37 languages, and spawned tons of themed versions that continue to be released every year.

While the majority of the 5,000+ board games published every year are designed by men, we’re seeing more and more modern games being designed by women.
