100th Board Game Played this year!

I just played my 100th board gamethis year!

And we picked a great family board game to play for the 100th different game played – Stone Age!

In January I wrote about the number of board games we played in 2011 and which games we/I played the most. By keeping track of the board games I play, it’s easy to look back and see which games I’ve played the most and how many different games I’ve played.

When I looked back on 2011, I was amazed to see that I had played 98 different games in each of the past 2 years. So I set a goal for 2012 to get over the 100 game mark (some New Year’s goals are funner than others).

In June I posted my Mid-Year report on how I was doing on my family game playing goals. As of the end of June I had played 68 different board and card games – well on my way to reaching the goal.

Well, now I’m happy to report that I’ve hit my 100 game target with almost 3 months to spare!

It’s time for a stretch goal because with the family holidays coming up over the next few months, we’re sure to get in more prime family game time. Think I can hit 125?

The Honor goes to Stone Age
I’m happy to report that we picked a great board game to play for number 100. Stone Age is a strategy board game that’s a lot of fun for families.

In Stone Age, you work as hunters, collectors, farmers, and tool makers. Every turn you have to choose where to send members of your clan (people) to work – to gather the resources you’ll need to build your civilization and win the game. With limited people and limited spaces at each location you’ll have to choose wisely.

There’s also an element of luck when you try to gather resources such as wood, brick, stone, and gold because you’ll roll dice to see how much of each you collect. The more people you place in those locations, the more dice you get to roll. But that also means you’ll have less people to send to other locations.

Of course, you can also send a couple of your people to the hut to “generate” more people. But that also means you’ll have more mouths to feed. Because at the end of each round you need to feed your people or lose victory points. You can send people hunting to get food or send one to the field to improve your food production. And you can also send one to the tool area to improve your future dice roll results.

Lest we forget, once you collect resources you then use them to build buildings or buy special cards that give you victory points in the game.

So many choices…

Stone Age has quite the balancing act of strategy and luck – a great feature for a family board game.

So the youngsters in your family may not be ready for it, but once they near the recommended age of 10 it’s time to let them control their own clan.

With great decisions to make every turn mixed with dice rolls to see how successful your resource gathering efforts are, Stone Age is a great family board game that we highly recommend playing.

Chances are, a number of games will pop up there this weekend because the kids are on fall break and we’re having an extended family gathering. Both a good formula for some more board games to be added to the list.
