More bedtime story adventuring in Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother!

Last week we shared about the cooperative story game, Stuffed Fables – where players are the stuffed animals helping a little girl.

Now that little girl has a baby brother with his own 2 “stuffies” – Pokey the unicorn and muscular Manny.

So it’s time for the stuffies to dive into even more adventures in Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother! by Plaid Hat Games and Asmodee.

While the game includes a new storybook, new tokens, sleep cards, and its own discovery deck, players still need components from the Stuffed Fables base game to play.

How to play Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother!

This is going to be a really short section because Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother! plays just like the original game.

Players choose the stuffy they want to control, take their stuffy board and miniature and begin diving into the new adventure book. On a player’s turn, they draw 5 colored dice from the bag and use them for taking actions to achieve the objectives of the story. They also fight and defend against the enemies in the same manner as the base game.

The game also comes with a new deck of Lost cards, Sleep cards and Discovery cards to use for these new adventures.

What’s new in Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother!?

As you’d expect with a board game expansion, Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother! comes with a number of new items to play with.

Since the games all revolve around adventure stories, the main new addition to the game is the new adventure book. Our first reaction to the new adventure book is that it looks much smaller than the original.

Size difference between the original and expansion adventure books.

While some of that is due to there only being 5 stories in the expansion (vs. 7 stories in the original), the biggest reason is due to the different paper stock used for each book. Every page of the base game adventure book is made with a thick cardstock. Whereas, the pages of the Oh, Brother adventure book are made with standard glossy paper – which isn’t as thick.

Another thing we first noticed with the expansion is addition of lots more tokens and mini maps. The two mini maps are on a double-sided tile with 36 spaces for character and minion miniatures. Stuffies on the mini maps can’t interact with figures on the adventure book maps and vice versa.

The new tokens include plastic (for Manny since he’s made of plastic, not stuffing), socks, planks, doors, magic sand, cakes, boxes, stone pillars, and bowling balls!

Now, doesn’t that give you a fun hint as to what adventures are in store for these new stuffies?

Speaking of new stuffies…

Like the stuffies in the base game, the new characters also come with their own special abilities as listed on their character cards. Pokey the unicorn doesn’t equip any weapon items, but instead uses her Puffy Horn to fend off enemies. Manny, as a macho action figure, is made of strong plastic instead of the usual stuffing of other characters, so certain status conditions don’t affect him as they would a typical stuffy.

The game also comes with new minions to fight. We get a kick out of the many little bedbugs.

We also like a lot of the new items that come into play during the various stories. While we don’t want to spoil much, we really like seeing new items like a squirt gun and sticky hand available to use.

If you’ve enjoyed playing Stuffed Fables with your kids, Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother! is a great way to keep enjoying the game play and fun adventures.

If you haven’t played Stuffed Fables yet and have young kids in your family, we’d highly recommend diving into it with your kids. Then once you experience it, you can decide on the expansion for more adventures. Just don’t grab Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother! only because you’ll be missing the major components needed to play the game.

We’d like to thank Asmodee for a review copy of Stuffed Fables: Oh, Brother! for review.
