Job Hunting slows Game Playing

Unemployed
What to do next?

Like many in these crazy times – I (dad) currently find myself in the ranks of the unemployed. And one thing that I’ve come to discover is that my game playing time has actually diminished during these last few months.

One would think that with more time on my hands by not heading in to an office each day and with kids out of school for the summer, that I’d get to play a lot more games. However, what I’ve discovered instead is that being out of work puts a damper on a lot of things. Things that I normally enjoy haven’t been as fun – like reading books, watching movies, and playing board games.

Instead, I find that it’s hard to sit and engage in entertainment type activities when in the back of my mind I’m thinking that I should be researching one more company, connecting with one more person, and writing more cover letters. I’ve found that my day is even fuller with work and the stress of trying to find the next grand opportunity.

Careers
Careers - one of my favorite games growing up. Now it's time again to evaluate what I want to be when I grow up.

So I apologize for getting less reviews out the door over the last couple months, but we still have over 80 game reviews that will give you plenty of fun time with your family. And yes, we do still get in some fun games that I enjoy playing with my family – it’s just not as frequent right now.

When after a hard day of chugging along or getting more rejection emails, there is solace in knowing that my kids still want to just have fun with dad.

And if you know of a company that could benefit from a marketing professional with an MBA and 15 years of marketing and management experience, drop me a line – I’d love to explore it.

  • Trent,
I know how you feel. I was unemployed for 9 months. However, please don’t give up on gaming. During that time of unemployment, I played Agricola every day with friends and family. If it wasn’t for that game, I know that I would have been stressed out and I’ve would have not been able to relax and get my mind off things that I could not control.

    Take care. You’ll find something.

  • Hey Trent,

The world’s economic situation is madly changing. Lot of people are losing their jobs, but everyone will eventually get a new way of making a living, and in a more pleasant way than it was before. Home offices and freelances are growing now.
Things will be fine, you can be sure of it.

    Best wishes from Brazil

  • Hi, I came across your site while looking for Mastermind instructions on Youtube. I found a game at my thrift store for about $1.50 just like the one that I had when I was a kid. The review was excellent and I really appreciated your daughter explaining it.

It would be easy to tell you to treat the job search as a full time job, but in practicality it does take more out of us. Persevere and remember that your family loves you more than any employer 🙂 They are with you and they value you, whether you are working or not.
