The World of Imagination
We recently returned from a trip to Florida and would like to introduce you to a web-based board game reseller in South Florida www.meeplemania.com. They often host game night events throughout the community and promote and support the world of strategy/euro games. They also have a board game blog called The Board Game Society with a number of good board game articles.
We’d like to share one of their recent posts that we think you might enjoy entitled “Just My Imagination!”
I feel bad for kids nowadays. With all of their super-awesome video games and hi-tech gadgets, they have lost the ability to use their imagination. I just watched Toy Story 3 at home with my 6 year old and can tell you his favorite part was right at the very beginning. The movie starts with an action scene that is based entirely on the imagination of the child playing.
When the scene finished I told my son, “see how awesome it can be to use your imagination”, and he looked me dead in the eye and asked, “What’s imagination?” My heart sank; I felt I have failed in my role as a father. I too have succumbed to the easy entertainment option of video games and gadgets.
Don’t get me wrong, he does enjoy playing with Lego and occasionally he’ll dust off some of his action figures and pretend the universe is about to explode and he must save the world! Unfortunately, this is the exception, and it happens much too rarely.
I am very excited about the fact that at the ripe old age of 6, I have already introduced him to games like Carcassonne and Lost Cities, and his new favorite Forbidden Island. Sure board games are not as abstract, but the theme, and graphics still help to transport your mind to another world.
That may be why for me, Dungeons and Dragons was such a successful game. It only helps to paint the world you play in, but it requires a vivid imagination to actually see it. Ask any diehard D&D fan and they can give you clear descriptions of their fantasy world, and life altering battles.
Board games can help you get back on the imagination train, and help your family transport themselves to just about anywhere they wish. The game Ticket To Ride is race to build your train tracks across America. Cartagena lets you lead a band of pirates as they escape from jail and, Forbidden Island is a race to find treasure before the island sinks! There is a theme and an adventure in every game, just look for the one that best match your interests, and let the fun begin!
I close with this: A recent study of the most popular toys growing up proves my theory correct. Do you know what the number one toy response in this poll was? A cardboard box! I have to agree, with a box you could create so many wonderful things and places that video games just can not replicate. And hey, all board games come in cardboard boxes so if the game doesn’t turn out to be a winner, you can always play with the box and use your Imagination!
