More Exciting Games Coming
We typically don’t write about board game projects on Kickstarter. But there have been a few noteworthy board game projects we just can’t pass up mentioning (like Ghostbusters the Board Game and The Great War in Feb).
And this week two more Kickstarter projects began that we’re also excited about.
The Titan Series
The first project that we’re excited to tell you about isn’t for a board game, it’s actually for multiple board games!
The Titan Series, by Calliope Games, is actually a full series of gateway games by the world’s greatest game designers that will be releasing over the next 3 years. They’re referred to as “gateway games” because they’ll be great for introducing new people into the gaming hobby.
Here’s the introductory blurb from The Titan Series Kickstarter project page:
The Titan Series is a line of gateway games—casual, family-friendly tabletop games—being created by some of the best game designers (“Titans”) in the world. Each a legend within the gaming industry, these Titans are responsible for such wildly popular games as Magic: The Gathering, King of Tokyo, Shadowrun, MechWarrior, HeroClix, Quarriors!, Risk Legacy, and many more.
Now Calliope Games is harnessing the talents of the Titans to create games you can play with anyone, regardless of age or skill level. Not only will you be able to play Titan games with your regular gaming group, but your friends and family—who might rarely touch a die—will also love playing them!
Our goal is to offer games that fall within different categories: a party game, a word game, a worker placement game, a light strategy game, a dice game, a game of luck, a card game, and more.
We’ve really enjoyed playing board games published by Calliope such as Tsuro, Got ‘Em, Roll For It, and Double Double Dominoes and are excited to see them working with these fantastic game designers for this upcoming Titan Series.
The game designers include: Richard Garfield, Mike Elliott, Eric M. Lang, Mike Selinker, Jordan Weisman, Zach Weisman, Rob Daviau, James Ernest, Matt Forbeck, Seth Johnson, Mike Mulvihill, and Paul Peterson.
Calliope has a high target goal for the project, but seeing as how they’re a third of the way to their target in just the first couple of days of the campaign is a great sign that it’s going to be successful.

The Confrontation
Those familiar with our reviews will know that Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is one of our favorite 2-player board games. This Stratego-like board game is full of tension as each player secretly moves their pieces into position to confront their opponent in different areas of the board.
At the end of 2013, we were happy to announce that an Fantasy Flight Games had brought it back in print with an updated version of the game.
Well, this year, we’re happy to report that a new version is being developed that won’t be in print at all. It’s going digital!
This week Offworld Games launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the digital version to life for PC, Mac, and iPad.
The game is just being called The Confrontation (dropping the Lord of the Rings name). But make no mistake – it’s the same fun game play.
Sure there’s a debate about digital board games vs. the physical games, but we know there’s room for both. As we’ve written about, we can enjoy both versions of a game in different settings. Face-to-face interaction is the best. But when friends are far away, a digital version can be a great way to connect.
So that’s why we’re excited for The Confrontation. The fun tension of playing face-to-face will be hard to match. And if we’re in the same location, the physical game will trump digital any day. But with a friend in a distant location, the realtime, online multiplayer option sounds fantastic.
Since the game is already in development, why the Kickstarter project? Because they’re looking to add an expansion to the game with 18 additional variant characters and 4 additional special cards. Like The Titan Series, The Confrontation is also about a third of the way funded in just the first few days.
There are plenty of pledge tiers you can join in at and many include beta access to the game – which will let you take part in the refinement of the game. That’s pretty cool.
