Othello stands the test of time
Othello is a classic game that has sure stood the test of time. I remember learning it when I was little and I’m happy to see that our children love this board game too. Like many 2 player strategic games, it can really develop good thinking skills.
While younger children in the family may just be interested in the immediate turn at hand – flipping as many of their opponent’s tiles as possible each turn and watching the board change colors/design constantly – older players will learn to think ahead and plan for future domination to pull out the win at the end of the game.
Like chess, they learn forethought can go a long ways to helping them win in the end. But unlike chess, you don’t have to learn many facets to enjoy it. It’s easy for youngsters to pick up and love.
The game board is well made and very helpful – in that each area has walls to hold the tiles in straight rows while still not getting in the way of fingers to grab and flip a tile – which is very important because there is constant flipping. And that’s really why the kids love to play Othello – it really is fun to see the constant shift in which color is ‘winning’ along the way. Just when you think you’ve got ’em, they turn the tables on you.

This is my favorite game of all time! I’ve played it forever, rarely see it anywhere else, and few people will play it with me (because I always win! ha! I mean, I lose almost everything else, I have literally never won a game of checkers in my life, this is the ONE thing I’m good at).
