Pirate versus Pirate – High seas fun
If you saw our recent review of Ninja versus Ninja, then you might already know what type of fun to expect with the latest family board game from Out of the Box – Pirate versus Pirate.
Pirate versus Pirate is a simple and fun family board game that has you trying to get the treasure back to your boat before the other pirate can do the same, or before they eliminate all your pirates. And one of the things that we like best about Pirate versus Pirate is that it’s a 3-player game.
You can tell that Caleb really loves the game in his Pirate versus Pirate video review.
Can the whole family enjoy playing Pirate versus Pirate?
Of course they can. This is an Out of the Box game after all. And that’s just the type of games Out of the Box makes – fun games for the whole family.
As you can see in Caleb’s review, moving your pirates is simple to do. However, it’s the triangle spaces on the board that add a unique twist to moving around. Whether you’re trying to get that treasure back to your boat or trying to end your turn on another pirate to take them out, it’s a great twist in movement.
Just like we did with Ninja versus Ninja, we worried about how the younger kids might feel having their pirate pieces eliminated from the game. Would they be offended? Would they want to cry? But in this case we didn’t need to worry too much because they had already been through that with Ninja versus Ninja. And just like in that game, Caleb can have no mercy – he’ll battle with the best and laugh either way.
How long does it take to play Pirate versus Pirate?
Pirate versus Pirate is a pretty quick game to play. We love the simplicity of it and that you can play a number of games in a row. We may find that in the first game, one player slips away with treasure while the other two are busy taking each other out. So in the next game, the strategies change and they try to balance their attacks. Either way, with it being a relatively short game, it’s very easy to simply go at it again.
Cutest pirates ever
Again, Out of the Box really did a fantastic job with the components in this board game. The triangular playing area on the board is perfect for a 3-player game. And the dice with bones through them and skulls for numbers is just fun to roll.
But it’s the pirates that steal the game. The cartoon-style pirates are simply fantastic. And if you really want to mix things up, you can interchange your ninjas and pirates with either game. So you can have your pirate teams battle out in the ninja dojos or your ninjas on the high seas.
Which game is more fun – Ninjas or Pirates?
They’re both a lot of fun and we don’t think it’s an either/or proposition. Pirates versus Pirates doesn’t play as well with only 2 players and Ninja versus Ninja doesn’t allow for 3. So if it’s just two of us that want to play, then we’ll go with the ninjas. But for a 3-player game, pulling out the pirates is the way to go.
The other thing we’ve found is that in our ninja games, the winner is mostly determined now by the elimination of the other ninja team. Whereas with the pirates, the game is won by getting the treasure back to their boat.
How does Pirate versus Pirate score on the “Let’s play again” meter?
Pirate versus Pirate scores very high on our “Let’s play again” family game meter for all the reasons stated above. It’s simple to play, is a great head-to-head battle, is pretty short, and has fantastic playing pieces.
Thanks Out of the Box for another fantastic family board game!
