Monkey Lab – Save the monkeys!
Monkey Lab is a great family board game!
It’s a board game that has a fun theme, fantastic components, nice artwork, and a good mix of strategy and luck.
Take a look at what Brooke thinks of Monkey Lab in her video review.
Can the whole family enjoy playing Monkey Lab?
While the game is recommended for ages 12+, we think it’s a game that can be played by younger children as well. We’re not sure why the recommended ages are set that high for Monkey Lab. Yes, it has a number of strategic elements that younger children might not be able to grasp right away, but they can have fun anyway.
As you can see in the video review, you get to take 3 actions on your turn and there are a number of different actions you can choose from. So thinking through your options and stringing together the best combinations might take a little work. But we don’t feel that it’s too daunting for a 6 or 7 year old to tackle. Now if you’re after a more competitive game, then you might want to stick with older members of your family. But if you’re just having some family fun time, then we don’t see why you can’t include some of the younger kids.
We also don’t think there are any elements of the game – like themes or artwork – that wouldn’t be good for children. We find the artwork to be very cartoony and the playing pieces are fabulous. Just take a look for yourself at the monkeys you get to move around as well as Murray the security guard – they’re just great.
Of course, the game only allows for a maximum of 4 players, so if you have more in your family than 4, then you won’t all be able to play the game at the same time. But that’s the only limit we see to the fun.
How does Monkey Lab score on the “Let’s play again” meter?
Monkey Lab scores high on our “Let’s play again” board game meter. First of all, the game doesn’t last too long (around 30 min), so it’s easy to set up and go again. Second, we’ve found that it’s another game where those that don’t win want a rematch. Maybe they just came up a monkey or two shy of winning or someone sent their monkey to the other side of the lab at a critical moment, either way they call out for a rematch. Third, those that come in to the room and see others playing always want to join in on the next game.
Once again a big thanks goes out to AEG for another fantastic family board game!
