Disney Mickey and Friends: Food Fight Game Review
As I sit here reminiscing about my lunch times in middle school and high school, it occurs to me that we didn’t see many food fights in our cafeteria. And I’m certain I was never a part of any of the ones that did occur. Of course, my memory isn’t what it used to be, but I’m pretty sure I’m innocent.
Mickey and Friends: Food Fight is a fun, fast paced game of dice chucking and food flinging for the whole family.
In fact, the fun begins when you read the start of the rules.
“Palm trees are swaying in the breeze and cool water is lapping at the shore — it is an almost perfect day at the beach! Mickey and Donald decide to surprise Minnie and Daisy with lunch from the local Snack Shack. Trouble starts when Mickey and Donald race to deliver the tasty treats to Minnie and Daisy. Mickey starts speed walking, but Donald takes the lead with a well-placed elbow. Mickey sneaks back in front with an outstretched foot. Finally, while trying to break up the ruckus between the two, Goofy steps in and trips them and soon enough, everyone is wearing lunch! Not very pleasantly surprised, a food fight and chaos ensues as hamburgers, french fries and even a shake or two are suddenly flying through the air”!
Are you ready for a good ole gut luggage grapple? If so, sit back and relax and enjoy Mickey and Friends: Food Fight.
How to play Disney Mickey and Friends: Food Fight
Setup
To set up Mickey and Friends: Food Fight, players place the Serving Tray in the middle of the table and each player places their Food Tray placing in front of them. Players each take 3 dice and a random assortment of Food tokens based on the number of players. These tokens are placed on the player’s Food Tray and with that, they’re ready to begin.
Game Play
The game is played over several rounds where players try to be the first to clear their Food Tray in order to win the round. The first player to win 3 rounds wins!
Each round begins with one player calling out “1, 2, 3 Food fight!”
Players roll their dice simultaneously resolving the outcome with each roll as fast as they can.
Each dice shows a type of food, an amount of food and the direction to send the food. Once a player has resolved the outcome of the dice, they roll again. For example, Goofy has rolled a “2”, “Fries” and “Right”. So he takes 2 fry tokens from his Tray and places them on the player’s Tray to his right then rolls again.
This continues until one player has cleared all the Food from their Tray and announces “Done.” This player wins the round and receives 1 Mickey Medal token. Players then reset for the next round following the set up instructions and a new round begins.
Play continues until one player has received 3 Mickey Medal tokens and is crowned the King of the cafeteria.
There are a couple variations of play including:
- Food Feast Competition. In this version, players are trying to collect sets of Food tokens, taking them from other players instead of giving them to other players.
- A Silly Potluck Picnic. This version is played the same as Food Fight except when players roll a “3”, everyone passes their entire Tray the direction rolled. In this version, the winning player only needs to gain 2 Mickey Medal tokens.
- While not a variant there are also ways to make it easier for young players–starting with less food and reducing the amount of food between rounds if they lose previous rounds.
The Breakdown
Mickey and Friends: Food Fight is a super light weight family game of chaos and fun.
Theme and Mechanics:
This game could be considered an abstract game, however the speed rolling and moving the food around from player to player really gives off a vibe of an actual food fight. It’s chaotic and can become quite messy as players attempt to land food on other player’s Trays but often end up missing.
There’s a lot of luck in this game (as would be expected from a dice game) and it can affect the outcome. There were several times where I rolled a food type that I simply didn’t have on my tray and could not get rid of what I did have for several rolls. However, as is to be expected, luck doesn’t diminish the fun.
Flow and accessibility:
Food Fight is a fast game where players are taking simultaneous turns so there’s never any downtime. It’s very easy to set up and get running and even easier to teach. If players know their right from left the game is a breeze. Although it’s overly easy, seasoned game players will enjoy throwing this one in as a filler once in a while.
Production Value:
How does Disney Mickey and Friends: Food Fight score on our “Let’s Play Again” game meter?
At first we struggled a bit with the kids getting aggravated and calling one another cheaters. This made for a great teaching opportunity and from then on we really enjoyed our plays of the game.
The chaotic nature of the game and the playful artwork really appeals to the younger players in our house. The variants also added for extra excitement. Mickey and Friends: Food Fight ranks medium-high on our “Let’s Play Again” game meter. I see it coming out whenever we’re looking for a quick filler and needing some good laughs.
