Animal Upon Animal is a fun Kids Game
Would you ever think of stacking a sheep on top of a porcupine?
Or how about piling a snake on top of a toucan?
Or what about a penguin on a monkey?
Well, in Animal Upon Animal you’ll have the chance to do just that!
Gather the family and see how high you can stack all sorts of animals in this dexterity game by HABA.
See what Caleb thinks of Animal Upon Animal in his short game video review.
Can the whole family enjoy Animal Upon Animal?
For many years we’ve heard how great Animal Upon Animal is for families. So we’re very happy to finally have a copy, play it, and give it a thorough review.
Sure, it’s a children’s game through and through.
But it’s a dexterity game that’s also fun for adults to play with their children.
First of all, kids inherently love animals. And given the chance to stack blocks or stack animals, we’d bet kids will pick animals every time.
Second, in Animal Upon Animal kids actually have a chance to beat their parents.
Most parents will have a better sense of balance when placing animals on top of a growing animal stack. But the roll of the die may make it such that mom or dad has to place something a bit more precarious that will make the pile come crashing down.
If the game were simply taking turns stacking an animal, then parents may win all the time. But the introduction of the random die roll at the start of every turn keeps the possibilities for kids alive.
If they get a lucky roll and get to place 2 animals, they’ll jump out to the lead. And if they roll the hand, then they get to force someone else to place the animal for them (with the change of making the animals fall).
Great game components
HABA does a fantastic job at publishing children’s games with high-quality components.
And the colorful, wooden animals in Animal Upon Animal are no different. (That smiling sheep is the best!)
The unique shape of every animal in the game makes it a lot of fun trying to stack the animals in all sorts of different ways.
Since our kids are older, they’ll try to make the stack as challenging as possible by just piling straight up.
And if they can stand the snake on end (vertically), then for sure that’s the way it will go.
We don’t worry too much about who wins – we’re having fun stacking crazy ways.
How does Animal Upon Animal score on our “Let’s Play Again” game meter?
Animal Upon Animal scores high on the “let’s play again” game meter because it’s so engaging. We’ll challenge anyone to stop after just one game of Animal Upon Animal.
It’s kind of like a Pringle – you can’t eat just one. And with Animal Upon Animal, you can’t play just once. It begs to be played again.
The set up time in the game last as long as it takes to place the alligator in the center of the table and hand all the players their set of animals. So in our family, as soon as one game ends the next immediately begins.
Thanks HABA, for another fun board game for the family.
