Tetris in a board game = FITS

Tetris was the only video game that my wife was ever hooked on. When she was younger, she got hooked on Tetris and played it a ton. When passing symbols on signs along the road, her mind would immediately imagine how the shapes would fit into place in Tetris.

So when I first saw the board game FITS a few years ago, I had a big hunch that it would be a game that my wife would enjoy playing.

And I was right!

I picked up a copy of FITS last month at SaltCON in a board game trade and quickly got it to the table the following week.

And sure enough, it went over really well.

Can the whole family enjoy FITS?

Absolutely! That’s what’s so great about the game.

In FITS, all players are working to fill their own grid as best as they can. Ultimately players are competing for the best score. But because everyone starts their grid with a different piece than the other players, every player will have a unique structure to their grid.

FITS is a great special-recognition and reasoning game that gets you thinking. Which is another reason why it’s a great family board game. Kids will exercise their brain as they figure out the best way to put their pieces in place.

Have to deal with randomness
While FITS can be considered a puzzle-game, there really isn’t a set puzzle to solve. It would be simple if players could choose which of their pieces they’d like to play on each turn. But it’s not that simple.

The cards determine which piece all players must play on that turn. It gets a little tricky when you’re building up, hoping for a certain piece to come next, and something else more difficult needs to be placed instead.

It’s that randomness of which pieces are played that also give kids opportunities to beat their parents – which is always fun in a family board game.

No down time
One other great thing we’ll mention about FITS is that there’s really no player down time. Instead of waiting for their turns to come around, players all play simultaneously.

Yes, some players may place their piece more quickly than others – causing some players to wait just a bit. But that’s really just a very little bit of time to wait.

And if you’re like us, you’ll find yourself thinking about their grid and where you’d place that piece if you were them.

We really like games where you’re constantly thinking about the game. And puzzling out your grid in FITS, is a fun thing to be thinking about.

No player interaction
The only downside to FITS is the lack of player interaction. The game doesn’t have any elements that let you alter or effect the other player’s grids.

Of course, some people may not see that as a downside at all.

Especially with younger kids – where sibling conflict can rear its little head – the lack of direct player interaction may be a welcome relief. It can let kids develop their thinking skills without the worry about their brother or sister messing with their grid.

How does FITS score on the “Let’s Play Again” game meter?
As we witnessed with our very first play, FITS is a game that scores high on our “let’s play again” game meter. There’s really no set up time at all and it’s such a straight-forward and light game, that playing again is a natural thing to do.

If you’re looking for a light, puzzle game to play with your kids where they’ll exercise their brain along the way, we definitely recommend FITS.
