It’s hard to play just once
“Who wants to play again?”
That’s a typical question around the table after playing a number of great family board games. And it’s especially great to hear when everyone in the family is playing.
One of the games getting that reaction the most in our house is 7 Wonders.
7 Wonders is a fantastic family card game!
Not only can it accommodate up to 7 players, but increasing the number of players doesn’t increase the game time. That’s because everyone is making decisions simultaneously – so the game time flies by.
And there are many options with every decision. So every time you play, you can try a new strategy – which naturally leads to wanting to play again immediately after finishing a game.
After all, the game’s already set up, let’s just go at it again!
The only caveat we’ll add is that the first time you play, it may be a bit intimidating. The wide variety of cards, colors, and symbols may leave you scratching your head. But with the help of the provided symbol summary sheet, it’s easily remedied.
Plus, you can also take a quick look at our 7 Wonders card game video review for an intro or a refresher.
Once you understand the basic flow and general card layout, you’re off and running. And chances are extremely high that you’ll play again and again.
Another reason why we’ll play 7 Wonders multiple times is that it’s one of mom’s favorite games!
Finding a game that everyone loves playing together – including mom – is simply awesome.
And set up time for us is a flash because everyone takes part in the game prep. Just like in the game where everyone is looking at their hand of cards and making decisions simultaneously, we all grabbed a part of the game to set up simultaneously:
- Caleb grabs the wonder board radomizers and hands them out
- Jaden sets out all the tokens
- Mom, Dad, and Trevor each pick an Age deck of cards and sorts it out then shuffles
- Boom – we’re done and ready to roll.
Everyone grabs their starting Age I hand of cards and starts making decisions. Pick a card, pass your hand, play the card to your civilization, and Repeat. And on we go.
It flows so smoothly and we’re all actively engaged the whole time. So the game time flies by and we hardly notice that almost 30 minutes have passed when we wrap up for final scoring. Then come the calls for a rematch.
All part of a great Sunday afternoon with the family this week.
Tons of fun and already looking forward to when we’ll play 7 Wonders again.
(Of course, you’d probably guess we’d say this about a game that’s consistently on our Top Board Games and Card Games lists.)
What games do you have a hard time stopping at just 1 play at a sitting?
Love Letter is a quick one that is fun with multiple plays. And The Resistance is hard to only play once. And Race for the Galaxy. And King of Tokyo.
So true. I think The Resistance is one that we have a hard time stopping even after 4-5 plays.
Most of the games I’ll play more than once are some of the shorter games. Love Letter and The Resistance are good examples. Another one my wife and I will play more than once is Dominion. I’ve also played Sentinels of the Multiverse several times in a row a few times, although that can go long sometimes.
We don’t often replay 7 Wonders back to back actually, but we do like that one. I actually have several co-workers that have it and play it all the time.
Aaron – we’d definitely agree on Dominion being a multi-play game. We haven’t tried Sentinels or Dungeon Lords yet.
I just want to thank you for the 7 Wonders rec. My son and husband are very much into board games but this mama, not so much, so seeing your wife’s rec for 7 Wonders (and Dixit!) was very helpful when we chose our Xmas games.
We have since played 7 Wonders many times and as you said, it’s a game you want to replay immediately. I am *not* a gamer at all but this game is just so much fun. I’m looking for more like it since the lads are so happy to have mom on board, so to speak.
Thanks for a great website and keep those mom recs happening!
blessings, Rose
Rose – That’s so great to hear your story!
And we’re very happy that our review helped you choose some fun games that everyone can enjoy!
