That’s It! – It’s Party Time

That's It party game box cover
Let’s get the party started.

It seems like a crazy Abbott and Costello gag like their famous “Who’s On First?” routine

“What game are we going to play today?”

“That’s It!”

“What’s it?”

“The game.”

“What game?”

“That’s It!”

…and on it goes.

Of course it couldn’t be an Abbott and Costello gag because “That’s It!” was just published this year by Gamewright.

Compact box with 200 cards.

How to play That’s It!
That’s It! is a new party game with a very simple objective: Be the first person to win three cards by shouting out the most correct answer to the written topics.

Not only is the objective simple, but the game play is as well.

One person (The Reader) draws a card from the box (200 total cards) and reads the first topic on the card. All the other players shout out any word they think of that could fit the topic. The first person to say the word that’s printed on the card for that topic – the “it” word – will get a token.

Each card has 5 topics listed on it. After a token is handed out for the first topic, the Reader reads the next topic on the card. As before, everyone shouts out whatever they can think of for the next topic – always trying to guess what the “it” word will be.

If two players shout the same word simultaneously, they each get a token. If after about 30 seconds no one has guessed the “it” word, then the Reader gets a token.

The point tokens.

Whoever guesses the 5th and last topic on the card correctly will gain 2 tokens. All of the tokens are distributed face-down because each token has a number printed on it (from 1 to 5). Once the tokens for the 5th topic are distributed everyone that has token flip them over to reveal their points. The person with the most combined points on their tokens gets the card. If there is a tie, the tied players each get a card.

The first player to get 3 cards wins.

Of course, that’s just the recommended number of cards according to the rules. If you’d like to play longer, go right ahead.

Can the whole family enjoy That’s It!?
Yes, the whole family can enjoy That’s It! – even if you’ve got a ton of family members. The first time we played That’s It was at a family gathering with kids, grandparents, and aunts and uncles. Everyone had a great time.

The topics are very family friendly, so you don’t have to worry about playing it with kids either.

While the game is recommended for ages 10+, we wouldn’t hesitate to let younger players join in the fun. There will definitely be topics that they won’t have a clue about. But they’ll love shouting out answers to the ones they do know.

That's It! party game
A wide range of topics.

Here are a few sample topics (and the “it” word for each) to give you a feel for the topics:

  • A Dr. Seuss character. HORTON
  • Something you almost always try before buying. SHOES
  • A food that makes you thirsty. CHIPS
  • A holiday that most people do not get off from work. HALLOWEEN
  • A type of insurance. FLOOD
  • A land animal that cannot walk. SNAKE
  • Something found under a car’s hood. RADIATOR

The card that we got the biggest laugh from the first time playing was the one that had the following two topics in a row.

  • A type of building often named after dead people.
  • Something usually stored in a car trunk.

While the “it” word for that first topic is “School”, the answer that most players first shouted to the next topic was “dead people.” After that we had no idea if anyone had shouted the correct answer, “tire”, because we were all too busy rolling with laughter.

It’s tough not to let your thoughts from one topic bleed into another.

Overall, it’s a fun light game that’s a great way to start a party and get everyone going.

That's It party gameHow does “That’s It!” score on the “Let’s Play Again” game meter?
That’s It! gets good marks on the “let’s play again” game meter because of how simple it is to play. It’s also a game that’s easy to keep playing even after someone has scored the requisite 3 cards to win. The only drawback we can see is if players get familiar with the topics on the cards. As soon as they hear “A state where you go skiing.” they’ll quickly shout out “Utah!” and get their token.

But we think that’s rarely going to happen. Because with 200 cards and 5 topics per card, that’s a total of 1,000 topics in the game. A great variety to play many times for years to come.

Thanks Gamewright for another great family party game!
