Crappy Birthday to You
If someone were to wish you a Crappy Birthday, I don’t think you’d be too pleased with them. But if they were to give you Crappy Birthday (the party game) as a gift, then you’d probably have them pull up a chair and play the game with you.
One look at this new party game from North Star Games and you’ll know right away that saying Crappy Birthday is all in jest. The birthday “presents” you give away in this game are pretty ridiculous and will bring a lot of laughter to your party. It’s definitely a fun family game as well.
How do you play Crappy Birthday?
Crappy Birthday is a very simple party game. All you’re trying to do is give the worst presents possible to the other players. If you can do that the most times, then you win.
All players start with 5 gift cards in their hand and 1 person is selected to be the gift receiver (it’s their birthday first). Each player then selects a gift card from their hand that they think the gift receiver will NOT want and sets it down in the middle of the table. Once everyone has given the receiver a card, the cards are mixed-up, turned over, and read out loud.
When the cards are read aloud, everyone can chime in with their opinion. And believe us, it’ll be hard not to offer your opinion when you see the gifts.
The gift receiver then selects the gift that that they dislikes the most and the person that gave that gift gets 1 point (getting their gift card back to keep face-up in front of them to track their score). Everyone draws back up to 5 cards in their hand and the person to the left of the gift receiver becomes the new gift recipient. And the wacky gift giving begins anew.
The first player to 3 points wins.
Can the whole family enjoy Crappy Birthday?
Crappy Birthday is a party game that everyone in the family can enjoy. The recommended age on the game is 12+, but we don’t think that should stop you from playing it with younger kids because they’ll love it as well.
The cards have text on them that augment the craziness of the photo. But even if younger players can’t read the text on the card, they’ll enjoy looking at the photos and making their selection. After all, they’ll hear the laughter and want to join in playing anyway, so you might as well find a way for them to play.
But don’t stop with just your family. Crappy Birthday is a party game through and through. So take it to your parties and have a great time with your friends and neighbors as well. And if you’ve got a group of teenagers over for a party – by all means pull it out and watch their extreme reactions to all the weird gifts.
Is every gift terrible in Crappy Birthday?
Nope.
In fact, there are quite a number items on the gift cards that we’d love to be given as gifts. But that’s what makes the discussions when the cards are flipped over so fun. Depending on who the gift receiver is, you’ll give different gifts. You may not want a stained glass window for your living room, but your uncle might think it would be the coolest thing ever.
When we play Crappy Birthday there’s always plenty of comments like, “I know what I’m giving Brooke for her birthday – she’ll hate this” or “I don’t have anything to give Trevor because he’d love all these.”
How does Crappy Birthday score on the “Let’s Play Again” meter?
Crappy Birthday scores high on our “let’s play again” game meter. And even though the rules say the first person to 3 wins, we find it hard to stop there. Our kids don’t like to stop playing until they’ve gone through all the cards.
Once you’ve gone through all the cards, you may think that all the fun is over and you won’t play the game again. But you’d be wrong. If you just play games with the same group over and over, that may be the case as the funny cards may start to lose their appeal. But we’ve found that playing with new people in the mix livens the game up again.
Thanks North Star Games for yet another great party game.

I’d love to get your feedback on a variant that we are testing out. You can find the rules here:

I think this version is better for 3 and 4 player games. I am still undecided about 5 player games.
Wow, another great review from you guys! I should put you on the pay roll, LOL!
One thing I forgot to mention when I sent you the review copy is that the game is available at your friendly local game store and most Barnes & Nobles.
Great working with you again!

We’re definitely up for giving the variant as posted on boardgamegeek.com a try – choosing cards for both what you’d like and what you wouldn’t like.
